Finnish Lapphund is the northern dog, which is the most common in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Karelia. It is believed that these dogs are some of the oldest breeds, which lived in the north. These dogs help people to hunt, carry loads, to protect homes and pastures. In the 17th century in the Nordic countries there was extended reindeer. These dogs help people distill and herd reindeer, and to drive them in fenced pastures.

Purposeful breeding of Lapphund became engaged already in the 20th century. As soon as they call it, they were Lappish Spitz and sheepdogs. The first breed standard was written in 1945. The International Federation of Finnish Lapphund dog trainers recognized in 1955. The breed standard was officially registered in 1975.
